Essex County Hospital – celebrating working together

12 January 2022

Yesterday, Essex Housing welcomed colleagues from Colchester Borough Council to Lexden Gardens, the former Essex County Hospital site in Colchester, highlighting the work being undertaken to transform public sector land into high-quality new homes for Essex residents.

Lexden Gardens is a development by Essex Housing, Essex County Council’s in-house developer. The development will comprise of a collection of 120 architect-designed homes, located on the former site of the Essex County Hospital on Lexden Road in Colchester. The visit today celebrated the collaboration of Essex Housing and Colchester Borough Council and illustrated the archaeology which has been undertaken recently on site. Essex Housing have been working with Colchester Archaeological Trust and have managed to display many of the items found at the Roman Circus Centre and are planning to hold a public open day on site in the near future.

It is fantastic to welcome colleagues from Colchester Borough Council to Lexden Gardens. Lexden Gardens is a flagship scheme within the growing Essex Housing programme. Our close-working with Colchester Archaeological Trust has allowed us to understand more about Colchester’s past while planning for its future and it’s been great to have the opportunity to showcase this today.
