New homes in Colchester move closer to completion

08 October 2025

A topping out ceremony was held this week at the new Lexden Gardens development in Colchester.

Yesterday, we held a topping out ceremony at our new development, Lexden Gardens in Colchester. Built on the former Essex County Hospital site, which closed in 2018, this scheme will feature 120 new homes in a prime location in Colchester within walking distance to the city centre.

Topping out 3

I’m delighted that we are now one step closer to delivering this flagship scheme which is transforming this historical site into a really high-quality development in Colchester. This site is a perfect example of how Essex Housing is helping to deliver the new homes that our county needs.

Councillor Lee Scott, Cabinet Member for Planning a Growing Economy

Through three-phases of development, the scheme will regenerate a landmark site in Colchester and restore the Grade II listed hospital building and other heritage assets. The current phase, which is being delivered by @Kind & Co Ltd, will provide 63 high-quality new homes.

This is an exciting milestone in the development of the Lexden Gardens project. We can now start to accelerate internal works on site. I’m delighted to see the hard work from Essex Housing taking shape on site and I’m looking forward to seeing the final product.

Councillor Ray Gooding, Chair of Essex Housing Development LLP

Homes will be available to buy off-plan next spring and are expected to be complete later in 2026. To find out more about the development, please visit www.lexdengardens.co.uk

The topping out of Lexden Gardens marks another milestone in our ambitious city centre regeneration programme. From heritage restoration to new public spaces, we’re investing in projects that bring lasting benefits to residents, businesses and visitors. Lexden Gardens will not only provide high-quality homes but also contribute to a more vibrant, connected and resilient city centre – one that reflects the pride we all share in Colchester.

Councillor David King, Leader of Colchester City Council

Topping out 2

We Are Colchester has been really fortunate to secure government investment to landscape a new public realm at the front of the Lexden Gardens. Though the overall contribution is small, this space will create a welcoming, accessible space that enhances the character of the area and encourages people to relax.

Simon Blaxill, Chair of We Are Colchester
