Public Open Day at Essex County Hospital, Colchester
02 May 2022
Essex Housing held two fantastic public open days at the former Essex County Hospital site in May, with over 50 members of the public attending to view archaeological excavations, speak to members of the archaeology team about their work, and see some of the finds recovered so far.
Excavations have been ongoing at the site for more than two years by the Colchester Archaeological Trust, and a range of interesting Roman finds have already been discovered including the remains of at least 19 brick/tile-built bread ovens, more than 70 Roman burials, and a large quantity of items such as pottery, jewellery and tools made from metals and animal bone.
